Visit to Cricket St Thomas
|
|
Over 40 people, members of the Club, their wives and guests, made their way to rural Somerset for the annual Spring break. The venue was Cricket St Thomas, between Crewkerne and Chard on the A30, and one of Warner Holidays historic hotels exclusively for adults. The original building was designed by Sir John Soane and is set in magnificent grounds with beautifully manicured lawns adjacent to a fascinating wildlife park. Many people recognized the manor house as the location for the TV series "To the Manor Born". The bedrooms were large and very well appointed, with all the facilities one would expect in a good hotel. Our group all had tables in the same pleasant area of the dining room so the holiday had much of the atmosphere of a house party and a wonderful camaraderie soon developed. The leisure facilities in the hotel were superb, and although the weather was poor on two of the days, nobody seemed to mind as there was always plenty to keep us occupied. At night after dinner there was a cabaret and dancing for the more energetic members of the group. To end the evenings, the hotel's resident pianist entertained many of us with a selection of jazz and blues. The undoubted success of the break was largely due to the meticulous planning and organisation of our Entertainments Officer, Jim Denley, assisted by his wife, Liz. Thanks a lot, Jim, for a very memorable and enjoyable holiday. |
